How to Safely Trim Puppy Nails at Home

How to Safely Trim Puppy Nails at Home

1. Get the Right Tools

Don’t use human nail clippers. Buy a pair of pet nail clippers or a nail grinder (a tool that sands the nail down). Have some “styptic powder” or cornstarch nearby just in case you cut a nail too short—it stops bleeding instantly.

2. Find the “Quick”

This is the most important part! Inside the nail is a vein called the quick.

  • On white nails: You can see a pink part inside. Do not cut this!
  • On black nails: It is harder to see. Cut only the very tip of the nail, a tiny bit at a time.

3. Take Small Snips

Hold your puppy’s paw firmly but gently. Cut at a slight angle. It is better to take three tiny clips than one big one. If you see a small dark circle in the center of the nail, stop! That means you are close to the quick.

4. Use “Distraction Treats”

If your puppy won’t sit still, try a “lick mat” with a little peanut butter (make sure it has no Xylitol). While they are busy licking, you can quickly clip their nails.

5. Stay Calm and Positive

If you are nervous, your puppy will be too. If they get too wiggly, just do one paw and finish the rest later. Always end the session with a big hug and a treat!
