Distemper is a very dangerous virus that affects a dog’s breathing, stomach, and—most scarily—their brain. It is related to the virus that causes measles in humans, but it only affects animals.
- The Risks: It often starts with runny eyes, fever, and coughing. As it gets worse, it can cause seizures, shaking, or paralysis. Even if a dog survives, they may have brain damage for the rest of their life.
- How it Spreads: It travels through the air (sneezing or coughing) or by sharing food bowls with an infected animal.
- Prevention: Distemper has no cure, so the vaccine is a lifesaver. Ensure your dog stays up to date on their “multi-way” booster shots to keep them safe from this airborne threat.
