Infectious Canine Hepatitis is a virus that targets the liver, kidneys, and blood vessels. It is a very tough virus that can survive outside of an animal for a long time.
- The Risks: Symptoms can range from a mild fever to severe liver failure and death. Some dogs develop “blue eye,” where the clear part of the eye looks cloudy or blue due to swelling. It can also cause bleeding problems because the liver can’t help the blood clot properly.
- How it Spreads: Dogs catch it by sniffing or licking saliva or urine from an infected dog.
- Prevention: Modern vaccines are extremely effective at preventing Hepatitis. It is usually included in the standard “DHPP” shot your vet gives during yearly checkups.
