Canine Parvovirus: A Serious Threat

Canine Parvovirus: A Serious Threat

Parvovirus (or “Parvo”) is a highly contagious virus that attacks a dog’s digestive system. It is very strong and can live on surfaces, grass, or shoes for months.

  • The Risks: Parvo causes severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and dehydration. Without fast vet care, it is often fatal, especially for puppies whose immune systems are still growing.
  • How it Spreads: It spreads through contact with infected poop or contaminated areas.
  • Prevention: The best defense is the Parvo vaccine. Keep your puppy away from public parks and “dog spots” until they have finished all their shots. If your puppy stops eating or starts vomiting, call a vet immediately.
